The Colorectal Surgery Unit performs emergency and elective surgery for patients with bowel conditions. Cases range from minor peri-anal procedures to major abdominal bowel resections for cancer. We are a leading center for the treatment of all aspects of colorectal disease. We work closely with other specialties in the trust including: radiology, gastroenterology, oncology and pathology to provide comprehensive and excellent care. We have a very close relationship with the Oncology Unit to provide cancer patients with integrated treatment for large bowel malignancy, with pre-operative short and long course radiotherapy / chemotherapy prior to rectal surgery, and adjuvant chemotherapy after colonic resection. We have a team of dedicated specialist nurses with expertise in colorectal and anal cancers, inflammatory bowel disease, stoma care and post-operative recovery as well as complex abdominal wound management. These stomatherapists support both inpatients and community-based patients with a stoma at your door step.
We have surgical expertise in minimally invasive surgery. This includes key hole (laparoscopic surgery) and robotic surgery. As a result, patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal surgery experience:
Laparoscopic anterior resection for neuroendocrine tumor of rectum
Laparoscopic right radical hemicolectomy for colon cancer
Laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection (APR) for rectal cancer
Laparoscopic rectopexy for prolapse rectum
